Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has accused Malaysians of using the Internet to spread lies about him. "This sort of freedom had made them resort to such action," Abdullah told the government-linked New Straits Times in an interview.

The internet that we know today is changing, turning from an open, enabling and profoundly public space into a communications system which can be regulated, controlled, monitored and - where necessary - curtailed. A regulated internet does not have to be a closed internet.

---- Maine considers restrictions on text messaging between lawmakers and lobbyists
Wary of lobbyists calling signals from the sidelines, Maine is taking steps to ban text messages and e-mails to lawmakers in session as it becomes the latest state to address the ever-expanding use of electronic communications in statehouses. More than 30 states have in some fashion restricted the use of electronic devices, such as pagers, cellphones and desktop printers in legislatures, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

The spammer had argued in his defense that he had already stopped sending spam by the time he was caught, "not because he realized that what he was doing was a violation of the law, but because he simply wasn't earning enough money by sending the messages."
